Relation to curriculum Elective modules for 5th semester students, within the pedagogy area of interest. This course focuses on integrating environmental contexts into biology learning to enhance students’ ecological awareness and teaching competence. It supports the development of analytical thinking, problem-solving, and environmental responsibility, preparing students to design meaningful, context-based biology instruction aligned with sustainability principles.
Teaching methods Lecture, inquiry (assignments and quizzes)
Workload 2 x 45 hours per semester, comprising:
✔ 100 minutes lecture and discussion per week
✔ 120 minutes structured tasks per week
✔ 120 minutes independent learning per week
Credit points 2 SKS = 3.34 ECTS (90 hours)
Prerequisites
Module objectives ✔ Students are able to explain concepts, principles, and procedures of biology and their applications in environmental education.
✔ Students are able to explain environmental components, benefits, and sustainability principles using real-world examples.
✔ Students are able to analyse human-environment interactions and the impact of natural resource exploitation, and propose proper environmental management strategies.
✔ Students are able to explain pollution concepts and environmental health issues and identify alternative solutions.
Content This course covers the following topics:

➢ Foundations of environmental education (concepts, principles, norms)
➢ Environmental components and benefits (biotic and abiotic)
➢ Plant structure observation and reporting
➢ Ecology and ecosystems
➢ Ecosystem dynamics and characteristics
➢ Biodiversity observation and documentation
➢ Human-environment interactions and sustainability
➢ Air pollution: causes, impacts, and mitigation
➢ Water pollution: sources, impacts, and treatment
➢ Environmental health: sanitation, housing, and water quality
