Relation to curriculum Elective module for 4th semester students in the area of ecology. This course provides an in-depth understanding
of aquatic ecosystems and supports students in developing ecological insight, analytical skills, and field-based
competencies related to freshwater, brackish, and marine environments.
Teaching methods Lecture, discussion
Workload 2 x 45 hours per semester, comprising:

✔ 100 minutes lecture and discussion per week
✔ 120 minutes structured tasks per week
✔ 120 minutes independent learning per week

Credit points 2 SKS = 3.34 ECTS (90 hours)
Prerequisites
Module objectives / Intended Learning Outcomes ✔ After participating in contextual learning, students are able to understand and explain aquatic ecology, including
freshwater, brackish, and marine environments; aquatic biota (plankton, nekton, benthos, periphyton, neuston); and
environmental parameters such as sediment, substrate, pH, temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen.

✔ Students are able to conduct field observations independently under guidance and present their findings in group
reports within classroom discussions.

Content This course examines physical, chemical, and biological components of aquatic ecosystems, including freshwater,
brackish, and marine environments. It explores ecological processes, biodiversity, and environmental issues in
aquatic systems.

The main topics of this course are:
➢ Basic concepts of aquatic ecology
➢ Limiting factors and tolerance ranges in river ecosystems
➢ Marine ecosystem concepts and deep-sea ecosystems
➢ Primary and secondary productivity in marine ecosystems
➢ Marine pollution
➢ Freshwater ecosystems (distribution, structure, biotic and abiotic components)
➢ Lentic and lotic ecosystems
➢ Utilization and pollution of freshwater ecosystems
➢ Sampling methods in aquatic ecology research
➢ Estuarine/brackish water ecosystems
➢ Biotic and abiotic components of estuarine ecosystems
➢ Pollution in estuarine ecosystems
➢ Use of aquatic organisms as ecological indicators and aquatic ecology statistics
