Relation to curriculum Compulsory modules for 4th semester students. This course introduces students to the principles of human nutrition and its essential role in promoting health and preventing disease. It supports CPL-1 and CPL-4 by providing scientifically grounded insights into dietary components, nutritional needs, metabolism, and their relevance to biological well-being. Students learn to evaluate nutritional information critically and apply it to real-life health contexts—an important competence for biology educators who are expected to promote holistic health literacy and responsible lifestyle choices in the communities they serve.
Teaching methods Group discussion, Problem-Based approach
Workload 2 x 45 hours per semester, comprising:
✔ 100 minutes lecture and discussion per week
✔ 120 minutes structured tasks per week
✔ 120 minutes independent learning per week
Credit points 2 SKS = 3.34 ECTS (90 hours)
Prerequisites
Module objectives ✔ Explain and present basic concepts of nutrition and health, types of nutrients, and their functions
✔ Explain nutritional adequacy, caloric content, and propose solutions to nutrition-related diseases
✔ Assess nutritional status directly and indirectly and apply it to health behavior planning
Content This course covers fundamental concepts of nutrition, dietary components, physiological needs, and health implications.

➢ Relationship between nutrition and health
➢ Types of food, nutrients, functions, and sources
➢ Nutrition for specific groups (pregnant women, infants, elderly, athletes, etc.)
➢ Nutritional disorders (malnutrition, anemia, goiter, vitamin deficiency, obesity)
➢ Diet and disease relationships
➢ Direct nutritional assessment (anthropometry, clinical, biochemical, biophysical)
➢ Indirect nutritional assessment (surveys, statistics, ecological factors)
➢ Nutrition planning and health behavior
➢ Stunting and breastfeeding
