Relation to curriculum Compulsory module for 6th semester students. This course introduces the biology, classification, life cycles, and
ecological significance of parasites relevant to human and animal health. It supports CPL-1 and CPL-6 by developing
students’ understanding of host–parasite interactions, disease transmission, and control strategies. In line with
interdisciplinary approaches, the course integrates parasitology with public health, veterinary science, and environmental
education, preparing students to analyze the impact of parasitism in biological and societal contexts.
Teaching methods Lecture, cooperative learning, group discussion
Workload 2 x 45 hours per semester, comprising:

✔ 100 minutes lecture and discussion per week
✔ 120 minutes structured tasks per week
✔ 120 minutes independent learning per week

Credit points 2 SKS = 3.2 ECTS (90 hours)
Prerequisites
Module objectives / Intended Learning Outcomes ✔ Students are able to understand and apply concepts, principles, and applications of parasitology in real-life contexts.
✔ Students are able to describe parasite habitats, distribution, morphology, life cycles, pathogenicity, and prevention of diseases caused by protozoa, viruses, nematodes, trematodes, and cestodes.
✔ Students are able to explain the role of arthropods as vectors, including their life cycles, disease transmission, and control strategies.
Content This course covers the fundamental concepts and applications of parasitology, focusing on parasites affecting humans and animals.

➢ Basic concepts of parasitology
➢ Scope, history, and host–parasite interactions
➢ Protozoan and viral parasites in humans
➢ Intestinal nematodes (soil-transmitted and non-soil-transmitted helminths)
➢ Tissue nematodes
➢ Trematodes (intestinal, liver, lung, and blood flukes)
➢ Cestodes (tapeworms)
➢ Arthropods as vectors and parasites
